Summer means getting outdoors and cleaning out the house. It’s a busy time for waste transfer stations (or landfills) as well. Many accept truckloads of junk that come from people’s homes and offices. Yet, getting the junk safely to a waste transfer station can be dangerous if the items are not loaded and secured correctly. Many do not pay attention to cargo arrangement or safety of operation since it’s a pickup truck and not a bigger truck like a semi-tractor trailer or a box truck. When an object falls off a truck, it can cause more damage than you think. For example, a 20-pound object traveling 55 mph has a force of 1,000 pounds at impact according to PennDot. Here are top five tips to help you load and secure the load in your truck.

1. Check the Truck – Before loading the bed of the truck, do a maintenance inspection.
Tires: Are the tires properly inflated? How are the treads?
Exhaust System: Is the exhaust system rusted or corroded? Could a muffler or other parts drag and detach?
Hardware: Is the hardware attached to the truck in good working condition?
2. Secure the Cargo – Using the right tools to secure a load is vital for a safe transport. Tie down the load with rope, bungee cords, netting, or straps. Also, make sure the anchor points are in good condition.
3. Distribute the Weight – Place the heavy items as forward as possible (closest to the cab) while loading from the left to right.
4. Tie to Vehicle – Do not tie the boxes or objects to each other. You must tie them to the vehicle or the trailer. Before starting your journey, make sure the load is secure and will not move.
5. Cover the Cargo – Cover the cargo with netting or a tarp to keep it intact and to protect it from bad weather.
