Like any piece of equipment, there are rules to safely operate it. The same goes for dumpsters. They are seen as equipment because they serve a purpose and can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Now you may be wondering how a person can use a dumpster incorrectly. It’s easier than you think. We see dumpsters that are filled too high, not on stable ground or used as a fire pit. Dumpsters make our lives easier by providing a central location to receive junk and/or trash with a scheduled delivery and pickup. There are no repeated trips to a disposal facility or figuring out what to put out for curbside pickup. There are rules to ensure the safety of person renting the dumpster as well as the crew using it. Let’s take a look at the top four safety rules for using dumpsters.
1. Place the dumpster in safe space. The dumpster should be placed on a flat surface that allows for plenty of space on all sides, especially for delivery and pickup. It should be in a central location close to the building’s exterior to simplify workflow. Also, the container should be free from hazards, such as traffic, heat sources or slippery surfaces.
2. Do not overload a dumpster. The waste should not exceed the wall height of the container. This prevents spillage when moving it and does not obscure the view of the building. The waste should be equally distributed in the container to prevent tipping and damaging the ground underneath it.
3. Do not place hazardous materials in the dumpster. Although this may seem obvious, there are chemicals that should not be placed in a container to prevent a fire, toxic fumes, a chemical reaction, or corrosion. These chemicals are easily found in basement and garage cleanouts – lighter fluid, pesticides, and paint thinners to name a few. Be sure to check with the dumpster rental provider on which liquids (if any) can be placed in the container.
4. Practice fire safety. Materials in dumpsters can easily catch on fire, especially paper and wood products. The dumpster should be kept away from heat sources. Smoking next to the dumpster is prohibited since cigarette butts, match books and even lighters can cause a fire in the container.
It’s important to follow these safety rules to not only protect the dumpster, but to also protect the crew, the property, and the public.
